In its second purchase in two days EMC said late Tuesday that it was buying eDiscovery shop Kazeon Systems Inc, whose software is used by corporations, law firms, government agencies and legal service providers.
Terms were not disclosed and are too immaterial to impact EMC’s results this year. The transaction is expected to close by the end of September.

A new survey of 300 European enterprise IT decision makers shows IT innovators are beating the recession. Results of the 2009 European IT Survey1, sponsored by BMC Software, reveal that one in four companies – the Thrivers - are beating the recession by focusing on improving their IT organization’s operational efficiency and reinvesting those cost savings into strategic IT projects that drive new business. Many of the surveyed CIOs highlighted their belief that sustained IT investment is strongly linked to overall business performance.
The survey also reflected interesting differences between the approaches to IT investment and innovation in the three countries. For example, German companies are the most consistent in their approach to innovation. They typically spend 24 percent of their IT budgets on innovation with a drop in spend of only 8 percent on average. In comparison, French companies are the most cautious; with innovation spend decreasing by 17 percent in the downturn. The UK has the most enthusiastic sentiment towards innovation, with 67 percent prioritizing innovation and 77 percent innovating in good and bad times.

At the moment I am working on what I think is a very cool project: a book on HTML 5.
There is so much news about HTML 5 that I thought I would use this blog to kind of pull together some of the emerging features. If you are new to HTML 5, then let me give you the nickel tour.
HTML 4 and XHTML were the last official versions of the HTML language (you know, that code you view when you right click in the Web browser and choose "show code"). It has been 12 years since the last upgrade. In that time we have had AJAX (or Ajax) for Web 2.0, Flash and SilverLight for Rich Internet Applications and this thing called the iPhone that have all shaken up the way we use the Web.

Like any pleased-with-herself three-and-a-half-year-old showing off her lace panties, start-up switch house Blade Network Technologies was flaunting its heady $230 million valuation Wednesday after closing a $10 million B round.
The largely institutional round – and let’s remember traditional VCs are ducking down any convenient rat hole these days – was led by NEC with help from Blade OEM Juniper Networks, existing Blade backer Garnett & Helfrich Capital – ex-Oracle lieutenant Terry Garnett’s venture buyout operation – and a mysterious silent investor, reportedly a big tech company that doesn’t want people to know where its money is going.

Like everything else in the cloud, software as a service (SaaS) is most commonly delivered in a Web browser and paid for based on usage; the more you use software, the more it tends to cost. However, the economic benefits of SaaS really fall into two categories. The first category is the cost savings to actually customize and deploy the software relative to traditional methods. The second category is the top- and bottom-line benefits to your business realized because of the advantages of cloud-based software.

Robert Moffat ain’t running IBM’s systems business, its chips or its supply chain and he ain’t serving as an officer of the company following his arrest Friday on criminal charges that he disclosed confidential inside information on AMD, Sun and IBM itself to a hedge fund ring that was trading on the secrets.
He has been temporarily placed on a leave of absence while he sorts his life out.

Developments in virtual desktop technology are creating a new generation of ultra low-cost endpoints such as network monitors, set-top boxes, next-generation netbooks, and kiosks. These devices can deliver a full multimedia experience over the cloud, and enable subscription-based and application-specific computing services.

A New York appeals court said the other day that David Johnson, the ex-IBM M&A chief poached by Dell in May and sued by IBM to make him honor his non-compete – which he intentionally signed in the wrong place to get out from under – can work for Dell. The courts weren’t happy with IBM. The district court that was asked for an injunction called IBM’s tactics “vexatious” and “a great disservice to the interests of Mr. Johnson and of the court in the orderly conduct of this litigation.”
